Success at STEM Women Events
Located in Australia, Finisar WSS provides world-class wavelength management components and subsystems, including wavelength selective switches (WSS), to leading networking equipment manufacturers.
“We found the STEM Women event to be a fantastic experience. It provided an excellent platform to engage with talented candidates, share insights about our industry, and support diversity in STEM. The event was well-organized, highly engaging, and a great opportunity to connect with future innovators. We have made 4 hires from exhibiting at the events. The events have been a great platform for meeting skilled candidates who align with our values and goals. We hired for the following positions:
- Process Development Engineer
- Production Engineer
- Mechanical Design Intern
- Process Development Intern
We were looking for a range of engineers with varying levels of experience, including students and graduates from disciplines such as mechanical/mechatronics, optics, physics, electrical, software, chemical, and manufacturing engineering. We offer a variety of programs, including internships, graduate roles, and full-time positions.”
“STEM Women events are very important for diversifying our pipeline. They provide a fantastic platform to connect with a diverse range of talented individuals, helping us build a more inclusive workforce and fostering innovation within our teams. Yes, we would attend another Women event in the future. The events have been a great opportunity to connect with talented individuals, promote diversity in STEM, and find strong candidates for our roles. We would recommend attending STEM Women events. They provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase your company and are an excellent way to build a strong talent pipeline. We look forward to future events and the opportunity to participate again.”
M.W. – Mechatronics Intern
M.W. found this event through her university emails. As an international student, she particularly liked that the event programme specifies which companies are able to hire non-local graduates. Despite having seen the job advertisements online prior to the event, M.W found that “the event offered a good chance for me to know more about the company’s business and the nature of the job I am interested in.” As a top tip for attending a STEM Women Student & Graduate Careers Event, M.W. recommends “Attend early and talk to as many people as possible.”
In her experience at the event, M.W. found that “there were some companies that asked the graduates who were interested to leave their email contact and academic background. After the event, I received follow-up emails from them. I found such initiatives by the companies encouraging.”
Jincymol Joseph – Process Development Engineer
Jincymol Joseph found the event through Instagram. The most exciting part of the event for her was “talking to women representatives who had a similar educational background as mine but working in diverse sectors. That enlightened me about the wider variety of opportunities awaiting me other than academia.”
Jincymol believes that without attending the STEM Women event, she may not have found her current role. With the event allowing her to interact with many different companies, she was able to grasp more of an understanding of the sort of jobs that her qualifications and experiences can allow her to enter. She also found it useful to gain “insight into the work environment from the perspectives of current employees.”
For those looking to attend a STEM Women Student & Graduate Careers Event, Jincymol shares her advice: “Do not hesitate to ask questions. The company representatives will be very enthusiastic to respond to genuine interest. Most importantly, follow up with them after the event. Being in contact with them will help you to prepare yourselves for any immediate or future opportunities better.”
In competitive spaces like the STEM industries, Jincymol found that the STEM Women event changed the course of her career “I am glad that I decided to attend the event last year, and grateful that it worked out for me. It really did change the course of my career. I hope there will be more attendees like me, who would otherwise end up in a constant circle of job hunting, rather than getting informed about the diverse roles that they can take on and flourish.” For companies looking to hire at the events, from first hand experience Jincymol suggests to also offer short-term internship opportunities for graduates looking to gain some experience.
